Host School: Texas School for the Deaf in Austin
The Texas School for the Deaf will host the Clerc Classic XI, the 2011 basketball tournament and cheerleading competition, and welcome teams from the Alabama School for the Deaf, the Arkansas School for the Deaf, the California School for the Deaf (Fremont and Riverside), the Indiana School for the Deaf, the Maryland School for the Deaf, the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, and The Learning Center (Framingham, Massachusetts) as well as from their own school.
The Clerc Classic, which originated at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in 2000, brings together outstanding basketball and cheerleading athletes from schools for the deaf around the country.
The tournament is named in honor of Laurent Clerc (1785-1869). Clerc is well-known for his contributions to the development of American Sign Language and deaf education. Clerc, along with Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, founded the American School for the Deaf—the first school for the deaf in the United States.

Best of luck to all of this year’s competitors!
