General Information & Rules

National Contest logoEach year Gallaudet University and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center sponsor the Gallaudet National Essay, Art, and ASL Contest for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. Originally a writing contest, both art and American Sign Language (ASL) categories have been added since its inception.

We invite you to enter the 2011 contest for a chance to win a scholarship or a cash prize.

The Clerc Center will be asking deaf and hard of hearing students throughout the country to respond through writing, art, or ASL to the theme: “How Has Technology Impacted My Life?”

CATEGORIES

There are three contest categories:

    • Art

    • Essay in written English

    • Essay in American Sign Language

 

ENTRY

Respond to the theme through artwork, writing, or American Sign Language. Complete the entry form and send it to us with your response.

 

DEADLINE

Contest entries will be accepted in all categories between
September 7, 2010, and February 1, 2011.

 

PRIZES

Students 15-19 years old will compete for scholarships to postsecondary programs of their choice, and the amount of the scholarship will be DOUBLED for those who choose to attend, and are accepted by, Gallaudet University. These prizes include $1,000 for first-place, $500 for second place, $300 for third place, and $100 each for two honorable mentions.

Prizes in the category for students 9-14 years old include $100 cash for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place, and $25 each for two honorable mentions. All participants will receive certificates of meritorious entry via e-mail.

 

RULES For All Categories

    • Entrants must be deaf or hard of hearing: hearing loss must be bilateral; hearing loss must be verifiable.

    • Entrants must reside within the United States and its territories.

    • Entries must be postmarked or in our office by February 1, 2011.

    Art and ASL entries must be delivered personally or sent through the U.S. mail.

    • Entries must be accompanied by an entry form (one form per entry).

    • Entries must have a title.

    • One copy of each entrant’s photograph is requested at the time of entry submission. (Please send a high resolution digital file if possible. Prints will also be accepted.)

    • Entrants may submit multiple entries, but they may only earn one award.

    • Late entries and entries in which the rules are not followed will not be judged.

    • We reserve the right to reject submissions if they are not considered suitable for publication.

    • All entries become the property of Gallaudet University; they may be published in any format and posted to the Clerc Center website.

    • Entries will be judged on the basis of content, creativity, voice, and adherence to the conventions of each craft (written English, art, and ASL).

    • Our judges’ decision is final.

 

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR ESSAY ENTRIES

    • Entrants must be no older than 19 years old and no younger than 9 years old at the time of submission.

    • Entries must be at least one page and no more than 1,500 words.

    • Entries must be typed in Microsoft Word, double spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font, and sent via e-mail attachment to national.contest@gallaudet.edu by the entry deadline. Entrant’s name and e-mail address must be in the document. The contest entry form information should also either be included in the e-mail or the form faxed to (202) 651-5708. Please do not send hard copies as these will not be judged.

    • Each entrant’s name should appear in the “Subject” line of the e-mail. (Please submit only one essay entry per e-mail.)

 

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR ART ENTRIES

    • Entrants must be no older than 19 years old and no younger than 9 years old at the time of submission.

    • Entries may be acrylic, pastel, watercolor, oil, cut and paste, crayon, and/or pen and ink.

    • Entries must be no bigger than 8.5 x 11 in size.

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR ASL ENTRIES

    • Entrants must be no older than 19 years old and no younger than 9 years old at the time of submission.

    • Essays should be submitted in Quicktime (.mov) or Audio Video Interleave (AVI). They should be saved in this format to a DVD or CD; do not convert them to DVD/CD format. (If entrant does not have access to Quicktime or AVI, Mini-DV tapes will also be accepted.)

    • Essays must be at least 2 minutes and not exceed 3 minutes. Please do not submit ABC, number, or handshape stories as these will not be judged.
