Language and Literacy

The history of deaf education can be summarized as a debate over the best way to help deaf and hard of hearing children participate in society. What language should be used to teach them? What language should they use to communicate? How should deaf children be taught how to read and write?

Parents and professionals in the field of deaf education continue to wrestle with the best way to help deaf and hard of hearing children learn language and literacy skills. In this section of Info to Go, we share information about language and literacy development; what the Clerc Center does; and links to other resources and information.
