About the Shared Reading Project
The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center's Shared Reading Project (SRP) is a nationally acclaimed program designed to teach parents and other caregivers how to read to their deaf and hard of hearing children using American Sign Language and how to use strategies to make book sharing more effective.

 

About the Training Program
The Shared Reading Project: Keys to Success training is designed to prepare site coordinators to establish the SRP at their own schools, programs, local libraries or community centers.

Participants learn to:

  • use the 15 principles for reading to deaf and hard of hearing children:
  • recruit, hire, and train deaf adults to be tutors;
  • market the SRP to families
  • work effectively with parents, caregivers, educators, tutors; and
  • plan, coordinate, and manage the SRP budget, operations, personnel needs, and program evaluation.
  • Participants will receive a wealth of materials, including an instructional DVD that will be useful
    in setting up the SRP at their respective sites. In addition, each school or program will receive
    one free set of 10 SRP book bags (valued at $200) to start their SRP lending library.
  • Participants will receive Professional Studies credits (PSTs) from Gallaudet University
  • Sign language interpreters will be provided for ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL translation

 Training Fees:
Early Bird Special (before February 1, 2012): $250
Regular Registration (after February 1, 2012): $325
Fees include materials, lunch and snacks for 3 days
(Breakfast and dinners are on your own)

Hours:
8:30 am to 5:00 pm all three days, 1 hour for lunch, morning and afternoon breaks

Registration:
This is an application process. When you register, you are applying to be accepted into this
session of the Shared Reading Project: Keys to Success training. There are criteria to be
accepted. Once registered, you will receive an email or phone call asking for more information
about your school or program. After this information is processed, you will receive an additional
e-mail or phone call to inform you of whether or not you have been accepted or if further
information is needed.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: Registration for the training will be limited. Participants are encouraged
to apply early. If you are applying after February 1, 2012, please contact the Laurent Clerc
National Deaf Education Center, Planning, Development and Dissemination office (contact
information is below), to see if space is still available. On-site or walk-in registration will not
be accepted.

***CANCELLATION: There are minimum and maximum numbers of participants required for
this training to occur. therefore, participants are encouraged to apply early. The Clerc Center
reserves the right to cancel this training.
