The Kendall Parent Teacher Association (KPTA) has been sponsoring a variety of creative FUN-raisers to support the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) this year from pancake breakfasts and mythirty one.com shopping, to Yankee Candles and pizza dough sales. The aim of the fundraisers is support KPTA activities that bring families together for activities at the school, social and informational workshops, and to encourage volunteer involvement directly with the school at events, like the annual Reading is Fundamental book sharing.

This spring, KPTA parent member Jessie Saunders came up with idea of teaming up with KDES teachers to sponsor a Spell-a-thon to encourage children from Kindergarten through fifth grade to learn how to spell grade-level appropriate words and to raise funds for KPTA activities.

"A Spell-a-thon is a good way to encourage children to learn how to spell and to enjoy spelling," said KPTA representative Roberta Mather.

At the end of February, participating children got a packet to take home that included pledge forms that the student could give to family members and friends. Participants were also given a list of words to practice spelling at home. On March 20, the students were given the spelling test. The teachers fingerspelled words to each student from his or her assigned list, and the student wrote down the words on paper.

"The children really enjoyed the challenge. My son Miguel was so proud of his first place win, and it was a successful fundraiser for the KPTA," said parent Bob Brehm.

On March 29, the entire school joined together to celebrate the winners and participants at a school assembly.
