Happy Birthday to Laurent Clerc!

CELEBRATING LAURENT CLERC--THE FATHER OF DEAF EDUCATION

Every year the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (Clerc Center) celebrates the famous deaf educator Laurent Clerc near his birthday. Laurent Clerc was born on December 26, 1785. Because his birthday falls during Winter Break, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) honors Clerc on another significant day in the calendar, December 10, the birthday of Clerc's close friend and co-founder of the first school for the deaf in the United States, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (born 1787).

In 2010, Laurent Clerc's great, great, granddaughter, Sue Galloway, librarian from the Oklahoma School for the Deaf visited the Washington, D.C. area. She gave two presentations at local librarians on her unique collection of historical Clerc artifacts--letters, photos, journals, and other memorabilia.

In honor of Clerc's 225th birthday, the Clerc Center asked Sue Galloway if she would record a video birthday greeting to her famous ancestor. KDES students also researched information on the life of Clerc and recorded a signed version of Happy Birthday.

Please enjoy the videos from Sue Galloway and KDES student Keonte Marshall below.
