Meet Me at the Car Wash—MSSD Football and Volleyball Teams Lend Muscle to Fundraiser
Teaming Up for Travel
After a hot and dusty summer in the Washington metropolitan area, the members of the MSSD football and volleyball teams are putting their muscles to use with weekend car washes to raise money.
Anton Fletcher, a running back for the MSSD football team, helped at the first car wash on September 11. "The car wash was to raise money for team travel to away games and tournaments," he said. "It's great to travel and meet people from other schools."
The sunny day turned out to be perfect car washing weather. "The car wash experience was fun. I had the chance to spend the day with my teammates working together. We earned around $460 dollars at the first carwash so I would say we washed about 35 to 40 cars! The money we raised is for our trip to Riverside [California School for the Deaf]; we will be playing against them on October 1. I want to be able to experience a victory on the West Coast-although seeing some old friends and meeting new people is a nice addition," said Mike Stamper, a running back/wide receiver and outside linebacker for the MSSD football team.
The girls volleyball team led by coach Jenny Cooper joined in on the fun at the second car wash held on September 18 and 19. "The football team raised over $200 dollars on Saturday and the volleyball team raised over $200 dollars on Sunday," said Mark Burke, coordinator, athletic and recreation programs. "We appreciate the support of the community for our athletes."
