MSSD Athletic Director Wins Pollin Award for Outstanding Coaching

Mark Burke and football playerMark Burke was selected to receive a Pollin Award in recognition of his outstanding coaching of the MSSD teams and his ability to inspire students to be successful in both athletics and academics. As a recipient of a Pollin Award, Burke will be recognized during a presentation center court during halftime at the Philadelphia 76ers vs. Washington Wizards home game on Tuesday, November 24, at the Verizon Center.

The award cites:

"As a first-time head football coach at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) in the fall of 2008, Mark Burke led his team to the Capital Area Football Conference (CAFC) championship. Now in his third year as athletic director for MSSD, Burke leads a program serving over 250 deaf and hard of hearing students attending either MSSD or Kendall Demonstration Elementary School.

MSSD students come from across the nation. Most have no prior organized sports experience, including 18 out of 26 players on this year's football team. Along with building athletic skills, Burke develops well-rounded student-athletes through positive coaching and emphasis on academics. As a result, MSSD student-athletes maintain stronger academic standing than non-athletes. As athletic director, Burke helps his coaches advance their skills, expands options for students, including a new rugby program, and involves MSSD student-athletes in community service."

The Pollin Award, named for long-time Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin, was created to honor those individuals who show outstanding dedication to their community. This year the Washington Wizards teamed up with nonprofit organization Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) to honor Washington, D.C., metropolitan coaches. PCA's mission is to "transform youth sports so sports can transform youth." Since 2001, PCA has operated in the Washington, D.C., area, impacting tens of thousands of local youths.
