MSSD Baseball and Softball Teams Cover All Bases at Hoy Classic X and MISAL League Championships
The MSSD baseball and softball teams had strong seasons this year. Both teams travelled to the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin for the Hoy X Tournament. Six teams competed, including MSSD, the Texas School for the Deaf, the Maryland School for the Deaf, the Indiana School for the Deaf, the California School for the Deaf- Fremont, and the California School for the Deaf-Riverside.
MSSD baseball coach David Rice has been building the team up since his arrival three years ago, and this year's team was well seasoned. The team placed second in the tournament, losing to California School for the Deaf-Fremont 12-8 in the championship game. Team members Ryan Baldiviez, David Mullowney, and Richard Navarro each received an "All Hoy" Award. Inspired by Coach Rice to aim for number one, they clinched the Maryland Independent School Athletic League (MISAL) championship by defeating Spencerville Academy 20-3 on May 13. Ryan Baldiviez, Richard Navarro, and Eric Klockowski were named to the first team and David Mullowney, Ricardo Rivera, and Albert Blake made the second team.
The MSSD softball team, coached by Lauren Huseby, was composed of younger players who did not win games at the Hoy Tournament, but performed better at the MISAL championship tournament. The team almost clinched first place at MISAL when the championship game went into extra innings, but it ended with a close 19-16 loss. "I am very proud of my team because they all played hard and fought with all their hearts through the games, " said Huseby. "Most of the players are freshmen and sophomores. They were good players and an amazing team." Huseby also noted that catcher Chelsea Lee won the all-star award at the HOY tournament for leading the team throughout the tournament with a positive attitude.
Congratulations to both the MSSD baseball and softball teams for a great season!
