MSSD Basketball and Cheerleading Teams Win Accolades at Clerc Classic X
The Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) boys and girls varsity basketball teams and the cheerleading squad headed to California for the Clerc Classic X tournament held January 14-16. This year’s site host was the California School for the Deaf, Fremont (CSD).
The annual tournament is a great opportunity for students from schools for the deaf to challenge each other’s teams on the court and to socialize and make new friends off the court. This year teams came from the California School for the Deaf, Fremont; the California School for the Deaf, Riverside; the Indiana School for the Deaf; the Maryland School for the Deaf; the Minnesota School for the Deaf; the Model Secondary School for the Deaf; the South Carolina School for the Deaf; the Texas School for the Deaf; and the Wisconsin School for the Deaf.
The MSSD cheerleading squad won second place in the tournament, and cheerleader Natacha Pericles received a Clerc Classic X Cheerleading All-Tournament Award. The MSSD girls basketball team took third place in the tournament. The MSSD boys basketball team placed as consolation game champs.
The MSSD athletes, coaches, and chaperones had a great time in California. Some of the MSSD parents flew out especially to see the tournament. "CSD was a great host," said MSSD athletic director Mark Burke." Our students really look forward to this tournament. They play hard all season—and this tournament is kind of like a dessert to top off the season." All the athletes took in a NBA game, the Golden State Warriors vs. the Miami Heat. On Sunday the MSSD group enjoyed some sightseeing in San Francisco. Burke expressed his appreciation to all those who contributed to fundraisers by the MSSD Booster Club, which raised the money to send the athletes to the tournament.
Congratulations to all the players in the Clerc Classic X.
