MSSD Grapplers Take Third Place at National Deaf Prep Duals Tournament
The Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) Grapplers headed out to California for the seventh annual National Deaf Prep Duals Tournament held from January 22-23.
"The team is small; however, we are doing pretty well. We are currently 9-5," said MSSD wrestling coach Thad Ferguson. "We finished third place in the National Deaf Prep Duals Tournament at CSD-Fremont [California School for the Deaf-Fremont]. We're proud that our team member, Albert Blake, won the Most Outstanding Wrestler award in the heavyweight category (between 152 and 285 pounds). He also received the Most Pins award in this tournament."
On Friday, in Round Robin action, MSSD defeated CSD-Fremont 35-34, the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) 52-24, and the Texas School for the Deaf 40-33. MSSD lost to the Maryland School for the Deaf 15-62.
On Saturday, with a 3-1 record in the Round Robin, MSSD was seeded number two. MSSD opened against CSD-Fremont, losing 36-38. With that loss, they were placed in the third and fourth place match, defeating ISD 54-24.
The MSSD Grapplers are members of the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling League.
