Breaking Ground: A New Dorm
A new dormitory facility for Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) has been in the Gallaudet University campus master plan for several years. However, we are delighted to announce that we recently secured the final piece of funding. Watch the following ASL announcement from John Castrese, director of Student Life:
Over the past 18 months, we have completed the pre-building phase, which included meeting with Student Life staff and other stakeholders, performing soil testing, developing building specifications, and drawing up preliminary designs, among other key steps.
With funding in place, we can move forward with the design and build process and will be hosting a charrette, which is an intensive planning and design process. During this phase, various groups will build on the work completed in pre-planning by providing input on the space, programming, layout, and functional needs of the new residence hall.
In coming weeks, surveyors and other personnel will visit our campus for follow-up soil testing and other types of site assessment, after which we will receive recommendations on the possible sites for the new dorm, a feasible timeline, and other critical aspects of the project. We will work with the Design and Planning Office at Gallaudet University and an outside architecture firm, to be selected through a competitive bidding process.
Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions document for updates; we will add to this as new information becomes available.
We are grateful for the hard work of many people at Gallaudet and the support of key people in Congress in making this possible. We are excited to be moving toward the opening of a modern facility to better serve our students!
