Optimist International Awards Scholarships to KDES Students
On March 24, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) hosted the Virginia statewide Optimist International Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Each contestant delivered his or her essay on this year's theme "Cyber Communication: Progress or Problem."
Students were judged on their poise, delivery, self-expression in American Sign Language, and relevance to the topic. This year's finalists were KDES students Ksenia Markel and Johanna Cruz. Each student will receive a $2,500 scholarship.
The Virginia statewide competition was sponsored by the Noonday and Sunrise Optimist Clubs. Kendall Demonstration Elementary School students take part in the Virginia contest because there is no contest in Washington, D.C. where the school is located.
If your school is interested in participating in a future contest, contact your local Optimist Club. E-mail the Programs Department at firstname.lastname@example.org to find your local club.
