Williams Scholars Give Thanks to Donor on Her 80th Birthday
Happy 80th Birthday, Mrs. Williams!
Each year at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) graduation ceremony, the Alan Robert Willams Scholarship Fund scholarship awardees are announced. For several years, due to health reasons, Mrs. Joan Williams, Alan's mother, has not been able to attend the graduation ceremony with her other son Paul.
On August 15 of this summer, the Clerc Center manager of the scholarship fund, Jandi Arboleda, visited with Mrs. Williams at her retirement home in Peabody, Massachusetts. He brought a special gift in honor of her 80th birthday celebration: a collection of thank you letters and birthday wishes from the many students whose lives benefited from the scholarship set up in her son's memory. (See the side bar for quotes from the letters).
Mrs. Williams e-mailed her thanks to Arboleda, "What a pleasant surprise! And thank you for getting greetings from the students--I am so pleased to see how well they are doing. If you have any contact with them, please tell them how proud and pleased I, and Paul, too, are of their accomplishments. Amazing, those teenagers are now lovely young adults."
The scholarship was set up in 2001, in memory of Alan Robert Williams, who graduated from MSSD in 1984, The Fund supports MSSD seniors who need financial assistance in order to pursue higher education at a four-year college or university. Since 2002, 24 MSSD graduates have benefited or continue to benefit from the Fund.
The Clerc Center and MSSD teachers, students, and staff extend our best wishes to Mrs. Williams on her 80th birthday (or her second 40thbirthday, as she calls it!) and express our appreciation for the amazing opportunities the Alan Robert Williams scholarship affords to the MSSD awardees.
