A dozen KDES students went on a field trip to the U.S. Department of Education headquarters to take part in their "Let's Read! Let's Move!" campaign. KDES student Nomani Moreno-Ofiu introduced Secretary Arne Duncan to a crowd of more than 200 students, educators, parents, and media representatives. Duncan also read a story to the audience.
Also in attendance was Rep. John Kline, chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and Michelle Kwan, a former Olympic ice skater and current member of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition.
KDES student Hiruni Hewapathirana also introduced Kathy Powers, a teacher and chef from California who advocates for good nutrition for children.
After a brief presentation, the crowd of children from seven local schools and programs broke up into eight groups by random selection and played activities designed to encourage good fitness habits.
