Workshop on demonstrating visual information in a tactile manner

Date and Time:
29 October 2013
12:30 PM - 1:50 PM
Peikoff Alumni House (PAH) - Upper Level

Entitled, "Protactile: Culture, Experience, and Respect the Deaf Blind Way," this workshop will describe techniques, known as the DeafBlind way, to use back-channeling as a way to demonstrate how visual information can be transmitted tactilely.

The DeafBlind Way is a paradigm shift in how the community perceives deafblind people. Developed by DeafBlind individuals, the DeafBlind way challenges the medical view of deafblindness as requiring "special" services and possessing limited capabilities due to a perceived disability. Workshop attendees will learn various techniques of back-channeling to demonstrate how visual information can be transmitted tactilely.  Topics will also explore boundaries when applying various tactile techniques. The DeafBlind way is an effective approach that allows deafblind individuals to work effectively with others in the community.
