Panel on the life of Junius Wilson

A panel discussion on "Racism, Audism, and Institutionalization: Exploring the Life of Junius Wilson" will be held on Tuesday, February 11 from noon to 2 p.m. at American University Washington College of Law. The presentation is hosted by the school's Disability Law Society.

The panel discussion will center around the life of Junius Wilson, who spent 76 years in a state mental hospital despite never having been diagnosed with any mental health disorder or having been found guilty of any crime. After being forcibly sterilized and forced to work for decades, staff—who admittedly knew he was wrongfully institutionalized—decided that Mr. Wilson would be best served if he stayed at the institution, and thus never took corrective action.

His only crime—being Deaf and Black in the Jim Crow South.

Esteemed Panelists:

  • Susan Burch, Ph.D., co-author, Unspeakable: The Story of Junius Wilson
  • Ernest Hairston, Ph.D., co-author, Black and Deaf in America
