In this exciting departure from our traditional webinar format, the Clerc Center is proud to present a pre-recorded discussion with Dr. Laura-Ann Petitto and her laboratory research assistants, followed by a live question and answer session. Important research is shared about the impact on brain structure and brain function when the lion’s share of a child’s knowledge about the world comes in through the eyes. Petitto shows how brain imaging and behavioral research of young children can help gain insights into important questions concerning the types of early-life experiences that young children need in order to achieve healthy language, reading, and academic success across life. As Petitto explains, “There’s an interesting relationship between the availability of revolutionary new brain imaging technology and the types of questions it now permits us to answer about the development and education of young children.” Join us to learn what the Petitto Brain and Language Laboratory research is telling us about the bilingual brain, the impact of early visual language exposure on the developing human visual system and the consequent higher cognitive language and reading advantages afforded to children, and why it is a biological imperative that children have early-life exposure to language. Her discussions are relevant to all children, including deaf and hard of hearing children, inclusive of young deaf children with Cochlear Implants and deaf children with Hearing Aids who are receiving intensive speech instruction.
Dr. Laura-Ann Petitto is the science director and co-principal investigator of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2). She is also the scientific director of her own brain imaging laboratory at Gallaudet, called the Petitto Brain and Language Laboratory for Neuroimaging (BL2), as well as a full professor in Gallaudet’s Department of Psychology, and an affiliated full professor in the Department of Psychology at Georgetown University. Petitto conducts neuroimaging and behavioral studies of infants, children, and adults to provide new knowledge about the biological mechanisms and environmental factors that together make possible the human capacity to learn and convey language, achieve reading mastery, and become a skilled bilingual.
