Multicultural holiday celebration

December is a month filled with holidays. People around the world celebrate in different ways. Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah celebrations may appear to be very different, but in fact they all have the common theme of bringing people together.  December also offers great opportunities for teaching  about Gallaudet's multicultural work.

Please join the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Multicultural Student Programs, and the Student Body Government in taking a little extra time at the beginning of this holiday season to come together and learn about the stories and traditions of these holidays. A multicultural holiday celebration will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., in Peikoff Alumni House.

The sponsors of the event want to share the holiday spirit with you, and that spirit, regardless of the holiday or culture, is about people feeling close and respecting one another.

  • Ramadan (Muslim)--August 11-September 9
  • Eid al-Fitr (Muslim)--September 10
  • Diwali (Hindu)--October 26
  • Saint Nicholas Day (Christian)--December 6
  • Eid'ul-Adha (Muslim)--November 16  
  • Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexican)--December 12
  • St. Lucia Day (Swedish)--December 13
  • Hanukkah (Jewish)--Begins at sundown on December 1 (ends December 9)
  • Christmas Day (Christian)--December 25
  • Boxing Day (Australian, Canadian, English, Irish)--December 26
  • Kwanzaa (African American)--December 26-January 1
  • Omisoka (Japanese)--December 31
  • Epiphany (Christian)--January 6
  • Chinese New Year (Chinese)--January 23

 There will be food, music, prizes, games, and other fun activities.
