Activist and writer George Veditz, 1884 & G-1887, is July's Visionary Leader. While he is best known for his efforts to preserve and nurture sign language by capturing it on film, Veditz's many contributions to the deaf community changed the course of deaf history during a time when deaf people were struggling to preserve their own culture and language. In preparation for the 150th Anniversary celebration, the Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA) partnered with the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation to create a new endowed scholarship fund. GUAA leaders showed the association's support for this fund by signing a check for $100,000 onstage during the GUAA celebration on Friday, July 11, to match the foundation's $100,000 contribution.

"When the GUAA learned of the challenge from the Newcombe Foundation for a matching grant of $100,000, we did not hesitate to take up this challenge," said GUAA President Alyce Slater Reynolds, '76 & G-'78. "This is one of the many ways Gallaudet alumni can express our thanks to the University."

Reynolds is shown above signing the oversized check while Sam Sonnnstrahl, executive director of Alumni Relations and GUAA, looks on.

During Gallaudet's 150th Reunion last week some of the alumni of the Gallaudet Dance Company had an impromptu reunion of their own at the Gallaudet Museum in front of the exhibit displaying a photo of the Dance Company's founder, Dr. Peter Wisher. The Dance Company, which was founded in 1955, will celebrate its 60th anniversary in April 2015 and the annual dance concert will feature former company members. Pictured from left to right: Cathy Morrison White, '80; Sue Gill-Doleac, '82 & G-'84; Barbara Tubbs Gantt, '83; Jacqueline Seaburg Kilpatrick, '74; Kathy Jones Weldon, '77; and Margaret Bray Housel, '84.

Ready for takeoff! KDES third grader Savannah Brown and other students and parents attended the U.S. Department of Education's "Let's Read, Let's Move" event at the National Air & Space Museum on July 23. Savannah got to wear a space suit and did a handwave to punctuate her introduction of Arne Duncan, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. Also attending were Miss America Nina Davuluri, celebrity chef Carla Hall, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, and Paul Jakab, chief curator of the National Air & Space Museum. They read aloud from The Astronaut Handbook, for which an autographed copy from all VIP and celebrity guests was gifted to the KDES Library.
