Teaching and Learning Development Day

Date and Time:
13 January 2014
8:30 AM - 2:45 PM

Location:
Jordan Student Academic Center (JSAC) - 1011

Description:

We have an exciting slate of events planned for Teaching and Learning Development Day. The overall theme is "Bilingualism Across the Curriculum: What Does it Mean for ME?" The day will start with a coffee/tea social at 8:30 a.m.

Once fully caffeinated, we will move into a panel discussion at 9 a.m. on the topic, "Bilingualism at Gallaudet: Where Are We Going? Where Have We Been?" The panel will feature OBTL Director and ASL/DST Chair Dirksen Bauman, GSR Director Leslie Rach, and Associate Provost of Planning, Academic Quality, and Institutional Research Patricia Hulsebosch.

The panel discussion will be followed by a keynote presentation, "Writing Across the Curriculum, ASL Composition Across the Curriculum, and Bilingual Pedagogy." This collaborative event will feature Dr. Michelle Cox, multilingual specialist at the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric, Dartmouth College and Dr. Laurene Simms, professor of Education and director of the Bilingual Approaches Seminar. Drs. Cox and Simms will engage in a conversation with each other and the audience about how key concepts and approaches from Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing in the Disciplines can be translated into 'ASL Across the Curriculum' and aligned with bilingual pedagogy.

Beginning at 11:45,  Dr. Cox will lead a workshop on Writing Across the Curriculum. The workshop is open to all faculty and staff who teach regularly. Lunch is provided, but registration is requested at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TLDDLUNCHREG.

Following the workshop, Drs. Tonya Stremlau (English), Raylene Paludneviciene (Psychology), and Gene Mirus (ASL-DST), will co-facilitate a discussion about the intersections of Writing Across the Curriculum, ASL composition, and bilingual teaching methods.
