Chief Theodore Baran
 
Short Biography

Chief Baran, who joined DPS on April 26, 2011, graduated from Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science Degree and spent 12 years as a Municipal Police Officer in Connecticut before moving to the DC area to take the helm at the Gallaudet Department of Public Safety.  He also led the Department of Campus Safety at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Ct. from 2004 to 2008.  A son of Deaf parents, Baran utilizes his knowledge of ASL and Deaf Culture in combination with over 20 years of working in schools and school policing. Baran has been recognized by the Vernon CT. Police Department with Letters of Commendation, The Chief's Citation Award, a Life Saving Award, and A Distinguished Service Unit Award and holds several certifications including Field Training Officer, Hostage Negotiator Certification, and Certified Baton and OC Spray Trainer. He has been a Certified Sign Language Interpreter since 1992.   

Chief Baran has completed the Executive Development Training Institute offered by IACLEA at the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety and currently serves as Vice Chair of the Crisis Leadership Team at Gallaudet and serves on the Behavior Intervention Team as well.   

Chief Baran's continues to strive for a Campus Police Department that works hand in hand with the student body, faculty, and staff at Gallaudet University by stressing integrity, professionalism, increased efficiency in communication, and continued training to ensure that the community and DPS can continue to work cooperatively for a safer campus. 

Baran resides in Maryland with his wife, Paula, and his two teenage daughters.
