Short Biography

Helen Thumann received her B.A. in Deaf Education from the University of Texas at Austin, with specialization in English and History. In 1991, Helen graduated from the Gallaudet University Deaf Education Program with a Secondary Specialization. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Her doctoral studies center around the areas of Adult Literacy, Transition from high school to adult life, Atypical Psycholinguistic Development and Deaf Education.

Helen is a Professor and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, ranging from Introduction to Education to Student Teaching Seminar. Her main interests are in literacy, language development, bilingual education and teacher preparation.

When not in her office, you may find Helen in one of her sister's (Mary Thumann and Carlene Thumann-Prezioso) offices, both of whom work on campus. Helen spends her "free" time working on her house, reading, cooking vegetarian food, hanging out with her pets and looking for (and hopefully eating) chocolate.
