ELI Frequently Asked Questions

Which airports are near Washington, DC?

There are three airports listed below. Weekday rush hour is from 6 am to 8 am in the morning and from 4 pm to 6 pm in the afternoon.

  1. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), which is the closest and is connected to the subway system (http://www.wmata.com/). It is about 7 miles southwest of Gallaudet University and takes about 15 minutes to drive there if there is light traffic. Rush hour traffic on Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway I-395 can delay trips by as much as a half hour to an hour.
  2. Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI), which is 31 miles northeast of Gallaudet University, and takes an hour or an hour and a half to drive to Gallaudet University on a mild day. Rush hour on the MD-295 Baltimore-Washington Parkway can slow down traffic near major interchanges. The BWI Parkway is the closest to Gallaudet University and is the most convenient freeway to use in order reach the I-495 Capital Beltway from Gallaudet University.
  3. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), which is about 36 miles northwest of Gallaudet University, and takes about an hour or two on a sunny day depending on the traffic. The Dulles Greenway VA-267 toll road is the access road to this airport and is free for airport destinations but not free for other destinations located along this highway. Freeways that provide access to the toll road are the I-495 Capital Beltway and the Custis Memorial Parkway I-66. International students usually come to this airport because it has US border customs processing.

How do I find the right building on campus?

The Visitor's Center has maps and other useful information. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) can help you find the right building if the Visitor's Center is closed.

I plan to buy a laptop and need advice. What do I need?

We recommend having both an Ethernet card and a wireless card inside the laptop for access to the Gallaudet University networks. All Windows/Mac updates need to be installed and anti-virus software is required to be installed, updated, and running in order to connect to the wireless network. We highly recommend a built-in webcam within the laptop screen for students to communicate in ASL with each other and to create videos for classes. There are software discounts available for Gallaudet University students at Gallaudet Technology Services (GTS). Please click on this link below for more information.
