Darlene joined Gallaudet Technology Services in December 2014. Before that she worked for 15 years in Gallaudet's Office of Communications and Public Relations in several capacities including Public Relations Assistant, Visitors Center Coordinator and Web and Brand Coordinator.
As Visitors Center Coordinator she arranged campus tours, deaf awareness presentations, and appointments for prospective students, U.S. State Department dignitaries, and various school and organizations. After taking on responsibility for web content on the university's top level pages, she helped facilitate and coordinate two university-wide website redesigns—successfully bringing a decentralized web presence with individual designs and structure, into a centralized management system with a coordinated design and tone. She also helped to facilitate the design and implementation of the new Gallaudet University logo.
Before joining the public relations team, Darlene was a scheduler of interpreters in Gallaudet's Interpreting Service. She then left the university and worked as a free-lance sign language interpreter in the Baltimore, Md. and Washington, D.C. area.
Darlene received a B.A. in English with a concentration on professional writing and a minor in psychology from Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa. She is currently working on a MFA degree in Creative Writing at Goddard College in Vermont.
Darlene comes from a large deaf family; her mother is deaf and a Gallaudet alumni, her paternal grandparents were deaf as well as many other extended family members. She has two sisters who are also Gallaudet employees and several other family members who are leaders in the field of deaf education.
Darlene is a long-time member of CODA, International—an organization for adult children with deaf parents, established in 1983. She was co-chair of the organization's international conference in 1998 in Alexandria, Va. She served on the organization's web team and helped redesign the website and revamp its social media presence. She is also a long-time member of the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia chapter of CODA and has coordinated numerous local retreats and events. In 2007 and 2014, she was co-chair of the regional South East CODA annual retreats in Buckeystown, Md.
