Short Biography

Dr. Shaw's research interests include interpreting in legal settings, the study of ASL and English narratives in disclosures stories, and changes in narratives across contexts.

Her current research projects include 1) a study of interpreters' decision-making strategies and recognition and use of power in legal interpreting settings by long time Deaf and non-deaf interpreters in Canada and the US, and 2) a survey of ASL-English interpreters legal settings across North America. Dr. Shaw co-authored curriculum on interpreting in legal settings that is used throughout the US, the BA curriculum and revised MA curriculum at Gallaudet, and she contributed to the Ph.D. curriculum in interpretation at Gallaudet.

Dr. Shaw holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Sociolinguistcs from the Union Institute and University, an M.S. in Education with a focus Teaching Interpretation from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), a BS in Linguistics from George Mason University, and an A.A. in Interpretation from Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University).

Her areas of expertise include critical pedagogy, fundamentals of translation and interpretation, consecutive interpretation, interpreting in legal settings, translation and interpretation skills courses, tellings and re-tellings, and research. She is the editor of and a contributor to Not Child's Play: An Anthology on Brother-Sister Incest. Dr. Shaw is frequently consulted on interpreting issues in legal cases. She continues to her interpreting practice and holds the RID CSC, CI, and SC:L. Dr. Shaw is a highly sought after teacher of interpreters and educators of interpretation and translation, consultant, and interpreter nationally and internationally.
