Stanford Achievement Test (10th Edition) Scoring Service

The Pearson Assessments publishes Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) to help educators and parents identify what students know and are able to do. For over 80 years, the SAT series provides valid and reliable tool needed for objective measurement of achievement and evaluating progress toward high academic standards.

When a new edition of the SAT is created, the Gallaudet Research Institute choose a representative sample of deaf and hard of hearing students, using our Annual Survey [See Demographics] data, and give them the new edition of the test. Results from their test responses are then used to create age-based Deaf and Hard of Hearing norming tables that will then be used for the duration of that edition of the test.

The scoring services at Pearson sends us raw scores to generate score reports using D/HH norms upon schools' request. See Stanford 10 — Scoring Services for more information.

The Gallaudet Research Institute developed screening procedures for using the Stanford 10 with deaf and hard of hearing students in conjunction with the 2003-04 norming of the Stanford 10 with a national sample of deaf and hard of hearing students. The purpose of the screening procedures is to identify the level of test item difficulty that a deaf or hard of hearing student can answer so that the student will be assigned an appropriate level of the Stanford 10.

The Stanford 10 measures a student's level of academic achievement in a wide range of content areas. It is published in several difficulty levels. Each level has been written to cover curriculum material commonly taught to hearing students nationally.

Primary 1 Grades 1.5 to 2.5
Primary 2 Grades 2.5 to 3.5
Primary 3 Grades 3.5 to 4.5
Intermediate 1 Grades 4.5 to 5.5
Intermediate 2 Grades 5.5 to 6.5
Intermediate 3 Grades 6.5 to 7.5
Advanced 1 Grades 7.5 to 8.5
Advanced 2 Grades 8.5 to 9.9

The Test of Academic Skills (TASK) is also part of the Stanford series.

TASK 1 corresponds to grades 9.0-9.9
TASK 2 corresponds to grades 10.0-10.9
TASK 3 corresponds to grades 11.0-12.9

Students taking the TASK are most likely working at grade level, that is, they will generally not take a screening test for test level assignment. Students who score very high on the upper level screening tests may be directed to the TASK levels for their testing with the Stanford 10 series.

The SAT-10 FORM A Complete Battery testing materials, published by Pearson, are for use with Pearson Central Scanning/Scoring services and could be hand-scored. The GRI does not generate score reports for abbreviated batteries or FORM D testing materials.

When schools want to give tests to deaf and hard of hearing students, and arrange to do so through GRI, we provide the test documents, along with special forms that school fill out and send with their students' test responses. The forms go to Pearson. Pearson, upon seeing the special forms, scores the tests as normal, providing raw scores, scaled scores, and grade equivalents, but NO normative data (since their norms would just compare to the general population). The data file is then sent to us directly, where we take the test scores, along with the student's age and we generate reports that add in the age-based deaf and hard of hearing norms created from the norming study mentioned above.

There are two reports and a data file:

  • a PDF containing individual score reports (ISR), with one page per student, suitable for filing with student records, or possibly sending to parents,
  • a PDF administrator summary report (ASR) which provides the data in a more compact format, with ten students to a page, for the "mile-high" view of a classroom or school.
  • a comma-separated value (CSV) file suitable for importing into spreadsheet software that contains the most important information from the ISR.
