Capstone Experience

Five PartsGSR 300 General Studies Capstone (4)
You've completed your Freshman Foundations and Integrated courses. Now, pull it all together with a "wrap-up" Capstone course. With your student colleagues on a project team, you'll work collaboratively with a local community group to solve real-world problems through projects, artifacts or work experience. This includes researching, planning, and implementing innovative solutions. In these Capstone courses students have addressed homelessness, poverty, violence against women, discrimination in housing and other socially pressing issues.

This course is a culminating experience that ties together all of the Undergraduate Learning Outcomes. Community groups, both local and more far-flung, will present problems/needs. Students from various majors will sign up for a specific problem, forming project teams, each of which will be facilitated by a faculty member. Each project team will devise and implement innovative solutions. Prerequisite: Completion of all other General Studies requirements.

Examples of courses offered:

  • Preserving Our Past for the Future: Collecting Stories of Deaf People
  • National Food Day, Campus Farmers and the New Geopolitics of Food Scarcity
  • Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking on Campus
  • Diversity and Social Justice
  • Introduction to Law and the Legal Process
  • Art in the Public Forum: Activism and Social Relevance
