As a member of the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers since 2005, GURIEC has been dedicated to advancing the field of interpreter education and increasing the number & diversity of qualified interpreters in the US.

Friday-Sunday, September 20-22*, 2013 at Gallaudet University.
(First priority given to applicants from the GURIEC region).
Current & aspiring Deaf interpreters, join us for a weekend of learning!
This training is appropriate for novices and pre-certified Deaf interpreters.
All participants are expected to read the book So You Want to be an Interpreter.
Questions addressed in this presentation include:
--What things should a Deaf interpreter do to ensure high quality interpreting?
--What kind of interpreting assignment is a Deaf interpreter qualified to perform?
--What materials should a Deaf interpreter study in preparation for certification?
--What ethical challenges does a Deaf interpreter face?
Language of instruction: ASL
Level of instruction: Some prior knowledge

Applicants from under-served areas (such as communities of color or rural areas) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Priority will be given to applicants from the GURIEC region: AL, DE, DC, FL, GA, KY, MD, MS, NC, PA, SC, TN, VA, WV
If slots are filled prior to July 1, registration will close early, so apply now!
You may be asked for a sample of your work before you are accepted.
We will keep a wait-list once registration closes. Participants will be notified of acceptance no later than Aug 6, 2013.
CEUs: 2.0 CMP or ACET CEUs (Professional Studies).
Cost: $65, $50 for students
Once accepted, the registration fee must be paid by Aug 16.
Transportation, food, and lodging are not included.

Launched in Fall 2012, the Underserved Mentor Project serves mentors and mentees living within the GURIEC 14 state region, geared toward people who are members of an ethnic and/or cultural minority, or living in a rural area. Preference was given to one mentor/one mentee per state. Applications are closed, but the work is ongoing! |
