Dr. Davila makes remarks during the Gala in his honor on December 5.Mrs. Donna Davila with her sons, Brian (right) and Brent Davila.
Dr. Robert R. Davila tirelessly served Gallaudet University from January 2007 until December 2010. At that time the University was in need of a leader with vision and insight to create and maintain a standard of excellence that the world has come to expect of Gallaudet. The Gallaudet community is indebted to Dr. Davila for all the accomplishments the University has made under his leadership including the largest enrollment in several years in the fall of 2009. This is a sure sign that the University is on the right track in meeting the needs of our students and providing them the education they need for a successful future.
In recognition of his outstanding service there were several special events in his honor. During Homecoming in October the Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA) honored him with a special presentation. Students and teachers from the Clerc Center threw a surprise send off on November 17. The University community including the Student Body Government, Graduate Student Association, Faculty Senate, and the Staff Advisory Council hosted a reception on November 19. The tributes culminated in a gala for the campus community, friends, family, and supporters in the East Hall of Union Station in Washington, D.C. on December 5.
Message to the campus community from President Davila
December 7, 2009
Thank you, Team Gallaudet, for the unbelievable gala send-off last Saturday. Even in my wildest dreams, I didn’t even come close to fantasizing the elaborate detail and the presence of so many friends, colleagues, and family members.
I can’t even begin to thank everyone for their kindness, support, and friendship. Donna and I will leave the campus soon with enough good thoughts and great emotions to last us the rest of our lifetimes. It has been an honor and a pleasure–and a thrill–to have borne the responsibility that was given to me three years ago. I will be cheering you all as you continue to do what’s best for our students.
I want to especially thank the Board of Trustees for sponsoring the event and the great committee of volunteers who worked so hard and well to ensure a successful event.
Robert R. Davila
