The purpose of GU WIN is to improve the health and well-being of Gallaudet University employees' lives through health education and activities that will support positive lifestyle change thereby resulting in improved employee productivity and morale. Putting a priority on wellness will build a healthier workforce.

What is Thrive Across America?
To encourage employees to adopt a healthy lifestyle, Gallaudet University is launching its 3rd annual GU WIN competition called the Thrive Across America Challenge. The goal of Thrive Across America is to increase physical activity and encourage lifelong healthy behaviors among employees. This 8-week team-based wellness competition will run from March 3, 2014 through April 27, 2014 and is in partnership with Kaiser Permanente.
How does it work?
Each participant creates their own online account on the challenge platform through gallaudet.thriveacrossamerica.com. Participants then log their activity minutes on the website each day. The challenge focuses on consistency rather than athletic ability. Participants are encouraged to perform at least 30 minutes of activity each day. When this is achieved, a Thrive star is awarded for their team. Team scoring is based on a combination of stars and average minutes. While participants can only earn one star a day, they can enter up to 60 minutes of activity to contribute to the team score. As minutes and stars are accumulated, the marker will travel across the map of the United States stopping at well-known landmarks complete with pictures and vivid descriptions.

How do I sign up?
Registration will run from Monday, February 17, 2014 through Sunday, March 16, 2014. Employees can register through gallaudet.thriveacrossamerica.com. The first 100 people to register for Thrive Across America will receive a salad shaker set.
There will be a Kick-Off event on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM in the JSAC, Multipurpose Room. From 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, employees can receive free screenings (weight, BMI, and blood pressure) anytime during that time frame. From 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM, we will host an opening ceremony. You will have an opportunity to learn more about the competition.
Is the competition individual-based or team-based?
This year's competition will be team-based. Team members can encourage and support each other throughout the competition. All teams must be formed by Sunday, March 16th. There may be 4 to 10 employees per team. There should be one team captain per team. The team captain will be in charge of creating the team and recruiting team members to join. The captain will also provide support and motivation throughout the challenge.
However, if you prefer not to join a team, you can still set up your own online account. You can log in your activity minutes on the website each day to keep track of your own personal achievements.
What are the competition categories?
There are two categories in this competition: teams with the most activity minutes and teams with the most weight loss. Prizes will be given to the 1st and 2nd place winners in each category.
What are the prizes and/or incentives?
The first 100 registrants will receive a salad shaker set with the Gallaudet University logo.
Raffle prizes will be given out throughout the competition to selected active participants: Week 2 (Omron Pedometer), Week 4 (Hip Hop Abs Workout Program), and Week 6 (Perfect Fitness Ab Carver Pro).
The first-place winning team will receive a catered lunch from Whole Foods and an on-site massage.
The second-place winning team will receive a gift certificate to the Bison Shop.
Active participants will receive a free t-shirt at the end of competition.
I am a team captain. How do I form a team?
After registering, click on the "Team" link at the top of the page. Create a team name. Invite fellow employees to join your team by looking up their name. E-mail is then sent to invitee. They must accept to be placed on the team. Please note that each team member MUST be registered for Thrive Across America as an individual first.
Do we have to participate in the Most Weight Loss category?
Definitely not. You may just focus on achieving the most activity minutes as a team. However, if you do wish to participate in the Most Weight Loss category, all team members must attend the pre-competition and post-competition screenings. The pre-competition screening will be held on Tuesday, February 25 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM in JSAC, Multipurpose Room. The post-competition screening will be held on Tuesday, April 29th from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM at JSAC, Flex A/B.
How do I report my progress?
You keep track of your own progress by entering your results online daily through the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Across America website.
Do we have to work out together as a team?
It is not necessary to work out together as a team. Team members can work out during their own free time. Team members must log in their own activity minutes through their online accounts. The team captain can track each member's progress and providing support and encouragement.
Will other people be able to see my weight online?
No. Only you and the Kaiser representative will have your personal records. We know this is a sensitive topic, so we protect your privacy.
