What do I do if I become disabled?

If you become disabled and no longer able to work, you may be eligible for disability benefits.

Sick Leave Loan Program

A staff employee may be eligible to borrow sick leave if he or she does not have sufficient sick leave to cover periods of personal illness or injury. Please refer to the Sick Leave Loan Program policy in the Administration and Operations Manual for more information.

Clerc Center teachers may be eligible for an advancement of sick leave for personal illness or injury. Please refer to the Sick Leave policy in the Administration and Operations Manual for more information.

University faculty may be eligible for medical leave. Please contact your department chair or Dean for more information.

Long -Term Disability

The University provides Long-Term Disability Insurance to all regular status employees. Employees are eligible after 30 days of continuous, active employment. The elimination period is 90 days from the onset of disability. The amount of the insurance benefit is 60 percent of your monthly basic earnings. Employees should apply for benefits within the 90-day waiting period. Forms are available in the Benefits Office, College Hall room 113.

Disability Retirement

Employees covered by either the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) may be eligible to retire on disability if they are unable to continue to work due to illness or injury. Please contact the Benefits Specialist for a disability retirement application.

Please check "What do I do if I am eligible to retire?" for more information.
