Who should apply to the Gallaudet IRB?
Everyone. If you will be running any type of research on campus or off campus, then you must apply to the Gallaudet IRB.
How long does the application process take?
The application process typically takes about 2 weeks.
Does research that is part of a class requirement require IRB approval?
Yes, if running a research study is required to satisfy class requirement, then the student or faculty member must submit an IRB application (class applications are available, reducing the application time; see the Researcher Information Page for more information or send us an email).
I think my research, is exempt, should I still apply?
Yes, it is the Gallaudet IRB who decides if your research meets the requirements of Exempt status. You must apply even if you think your research will be exempt.
I am doing market research, should I still apply?
Yes, but not in the same way as everyone else. To apply, send us an email at IRB@Gallaudet.edu and tell us about your market research. Be as detailed and specific as possible. Depending on your study, you may or may not need to apply.
Am I allowed to videotape my participants?
Yes, many studies use videotaping. When a researcher wants to video tape their participants, the researcher must create a Video Release Form which each participant must sign. See the sample Video Release Form.
I am a Gallaudet student, but I am not going to recruit any participants here on campus, do I still need to apply?
Yes, you must get the approval of the Gallaudet IRB because you are a Gallaudet University student.
