Office of Institutional Research

The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) plays a vital role in the provision of information for planning and decision making in both administrative and academic capacities. OIR provides official data and information about the University for the federal government, other external agencies, and university administration, faculty and staff. OIR supports university-wide strategic planning; supports academic program review; manages and coordinates the majority of campus survey development and research; provides reports and management information
The mission of OIR is to be accountable to the University administration and community through the provision of information that is theoretically sound, methodologically rigorous and accurate. In addition, Institutional Research will provide useful information in a usable format that is cost-effective, accurate, truthful and unbiased.
Functions of Institutional Research at Gallaudet University
- Providing the University with information that supports institutional strategic planning, policy formation and decision-making.
- Performing internal and external environmental scanning and projecting future trends and needs in support of institutional planning.
- Producing descriptive profiles of students and faculty; longitudinal analyses of student demographics, and other institutional performance data.
- Developing and disseminating benchmarks for the university and units within the university.
- Develop document assessment processes for integration into institutional effectiveness studies.
- Maintaining a central repository of data on both the program and institutional levels.
- Generating analytical reports of student attrition and graduation rates.
- Providing data about the institution to external regulatory agencies.
- Coordinating the University's reporting obligations to other external agencies.
- Designing, conducting, analyzing and disseminating the results of analytical studies including entering student characteristics, campus climate, post-graduation employment, course evaluations, and traits of non-returning students.
- Compiling, publishing and disseminating the university data through the Data Warehouse System, Monthly Performance Statistics Reports, and periodic reports.
- Preparing various reports for the federal government including the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and GPRA.
- Developing and disseminating disaggregated data to administrative offices, academic departments, and university committees in a manner that supports the needs of various University constituencies.
- Providing information and expertise in the areas of institutional assessment, academic program review, and strategic planning.
- Serving as a resource for re-accreditation self-studies.
- Providing analytical and consulting services to University committees and departments on an as-needed basis for program review and improvement.
