Sasakawa International Scholarship
Name: Victor J. Cornejo
Field of Study: Mathematics and Accounting
My name is Victor J. Cornejo. I am a 28-year-old Peruvian student. I was born in Lima, Peru in 1981. I have been deaf since birth. I am currently a senior at Gallaudet University majoring in Mathematics and Accounting. I will graduate in May 2011. My goals are to become a teacher of Mathematics and I plan to take the Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) examination upon graduation. I will work and help other Deaf people from other countries in the future that want to study but who have not had the opportunity because of living conditions in countries with many economic and political problems. Because of these situations, deaf people are often discriminated against and are without support. I want to be there to help them overcome and/or remove any barriers. I would like to set up an office serving deaf people in those places.
My project for the Sasakawa Scholarship is serving as a Student Ambassador for the Center for International Programs and Services. I helped new international students for the English Language Institute during the two-week New Student Orientation and helped the new international students adapt to university life at Gallaudet University. Some of my tasks included helping the new international students fill out immigration forms, teaching them about Gallaudet health insurance and helping them get used to dorm life. There was also an instance where a student needed to go to the hospital; I was there to take him. In addition to helping students, I am always available to co-host international visitors to Gallaudet University.
The Sasakawa scholarship has provided me with opportunity to further my education towards my Bachelor degree in Mathematics and Accounting. Working on the Sasakawa Scholarship project has allowed me to learn about the field of International Education and to help international students succeed in their pursuit of higher education.
