World Deaf Leadership
Name: Anthony Chong
Field of Study: Deaf Studies with Concentration in Cultural Studies
My name is Vee Yee Chong from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I happily received the WDL scholarship award in 2010 to study at Gallaudet University. I began pursuing my graduate degree in Deaf Studies with a concentration in Cultural Studies in 2011. I chose Gallaudet University for graduate study because I like and love learning more about Deaf studies. Gallaudet University is the best place for me to study because the resources related to deaf people around the world are the richest here.
My dream career is to become a professor or researcher in a University - where I will be able to use my knowledge in Linguistics, Deaf Studies and Deaf Education to empower Deaf people in Malaysia. Therefore, I am doing my best to graduate with a Masters degree in Deaf Studies and hope to start my PhD somewhere else, but not too soon.
With the PhD degree, I believe I will be able to bring the change to the Deaf community in Malaysia through academic ways. Some brilliant strategies are needed to steer the path Deaf community currently is in towards a better and bright life. The awareness about Deaf community can be made to happen through research projects and academic articles related to Deaf people. Despite the fact that there are barriers we need to overcome, I would like to see one day a deaf center established in a Malaysian university, to increase more opportunities for the people to understand Deaf community in a better way.
