Biographical Sketch

In 1910, Raymond Delmar Cosgrove was born in California. In 1928, he entered Gallaudet College and graduated in 1931. He was immediately employed as a printer in Manassas, Virginia. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1936 and continued as a newspaper printer. In 1945, he started work in a commercial print shop in San Diego, California. On April 8, 1983, he died in San Diego, CA from heart failure.

Scope and Content

Cosgrove's collection consists of approximately 2,500 pages and falls into the years, 1928-1931.

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, the majority being letters from his then fiancée Mary I. Ross (class of 1931). Other correspondence include letters from family, classmates, and people related to the college. Included in this collection are correspondence from Florence Schornstein, Velma Brassell, Mrs. Cosgrove, Dr. E.J. Davis, Virginia Faris, and Dorothy C. Grow.

The final series of this collection consists of college notebooks, class essays, exams, and personal effects such as pens, keys, a family bible, and a belt buckle.

Through reading the correspondence in this collection, one can get a clear idea and feel for what student life was like at Gallaudet College during the late twenties. Social, residential, as well as academic responsibilities and activities are described throughout the correspondence.
