Biographical Sketch

Herbert Draper Gallaudet was Edward Miner Gallaudet's youngest son. His middle name came from Amos G. Draper, who was a friend of Edward M. Gallaudet. Herbert D. Gallaudet was born in Washington, DC on September 12, 1876. He attended the Friends School and graduated from Yale University. He married Elizabeth Young and had one daughter, Ellen, in 1911. He studied for the ministry in New England and, in 1912, he became the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he served until he retired in 1938. He served as an Army captain during World War I. Herbert D. Gallaudet died in Pine Orchard, Branford, Connecticut on June 24, 1944.

Scope and Content

The papers of Herbert D. Gallaudet consist primarily of his letters from his parents Edward Miner Gallaudet and Susan Denison Gallaudet. This collection is dated from 1885 to 1903. Of particular note there are no letters written between 1896 and 1899 from Edward Miner Gallaudet. The folder entitled "Miscellaneous" contains a visit card, a dance card, and four snapshots from circa 1910s and 1920s. Also an albumen print (made in Waterbury, Conn.) showing two ladies named Betty Lamb and Elizabeth Young; and finally a 1900 newspaper clipping from the Deaf Mutes' Journal.
