Biographical Sketch

Martin Gary Minter was born on January 10, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York. He received his bachelors in Physical Education in 1966 from Cortland State College and his masters in 1969 in Physical Education and Special Education from University of Maryland. Minter began his involvement with Gallaudet as a part time Physical Education instructor and dorm counselor. He became a full-time instructor in Physical Education in 1968. Also, he was known as the baseball coach with most wins in Gallaudet's history (1968-1979 and 1981- 1983) and he was the soccer coach. Minter was also the head soccer coach for the USA team for the World Games for the Deaf in 1980 and 1985. He was also one of the key aspects in receiving accreditation for the Recreation major by the National Recreation and Park Association. Also, Minter wrote books concerning sex education and drug abuse. He had a wife, Annie and two children. Minter passed away prematurely of a heart attack on May 12, 1994.

Scope and Content

The Martin Minter Papers consists of papers related to Martin Minter's professional career at Gallaudet. The papers include Minter's dissertation, various articles submitted for journal publication, his work on revising the handbook for the Physical Education and Recreation Department, and some letters. The papers are dated from 1987-1991, the bulk dating in 1987-1988.
