Gallaudet University was recently selected by U.S. News & World Report as the number one Best Value Schools - Regional Universities (North) in the 2014 "U.S. News Best Colleges" ranking. According to U.S. News & World Report, the Best Values Schools calculations take into consideration the university's academic quality combined with the 2012-2103 net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid.

"The U.S. News & World Report rankings reflect our efforts at Gallaudet University to ensure that the cost of higher education remains affordable for our students," said Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz. "While you cannot truly put a dollar amount on the value of a college education, it is in fact invaluable. As the ranking indicates, Gallaudet strives to keep tuition and fees reasonable and competitive."

Students have many financing options such as scholarships, financial aid, and work-study, including:

  • Gallaudet's Merit-based scholarships - open to all deaf and hard of hearing undergraduate students whose scholastic and personal achievements are exemplary. These scholarships may be awarded for up to four years of study, or three years for transfer students. All newly admitted students are automatically considered for these scholarships. • Vocational Rehabilitation - many students on campus receive some type of Vocational Rehabilitation support from their home states. For a listing of VR agencies by state, click here.
  • Institutional scholarships - awarded by the Financial Aid Office through gift funding that is administered by the university. The Financial Aid staff matches students with scholarship criteria based on the information you provide on your Institutional Financial Aid Application.
  • Private scholarships - can be received from outside sources such as a high school, churches, community organizations, or private businesses. For a list of private scholarship opportunities, click here. There are also several commercial scholarship search engines that can assist with a nationwide search of private scholarship programs.
  • Federal Grant aid - federal monies that do not need to be repaid, such as the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant.
  • Federal Loans - monies that must be repaid after graduation or withdrawal from college. Federal loan programs include Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Stafford Loans, and Federal PLUS Loans.
  • Federal Work Study - allows students to earn money during the fall and spring semesters through part-time employment.

There are other financial resources available such as:

  • On-campus employment not supported by Federal Work Study
  • Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance
  • Private loan programs that must be repaid

The Financial Aid Office staff work directly with students and families to design a personalized financial aid package. To learn more about the financial aid options available click here.
