Professional Development Grants for Faculty

The committee conducts three calls-for-proposals over the course of one academic year - October to September. The expenditure for each round is limited to approximately one-third of our available funds so that the same level of financial support is available throughout the year.

The Timelines for AY 2015-2016 are as follows:

Individual full-time regular University Faculty members, teams of full-time regular University Faculty, or departments representing full-time regular University Faculty are invited to submit written proposals for activities that meet the criteria(s) below.

As decided by the administration, proposals will be evaluated based on how they address one or more of the following areas:

  • active teaching and learning,
  • use of assessment to improve teaching and learning,
  • student involvement in research,
  • bilingual teaching and learning, especially in the areas of
 pedagogy and curriculum,
  • extended learning for American Sign Language and/or bilingual 
classroom discourse strategies, and/or
  • initiatives that have the potential to impact a large portion of
 the Gallaudet teaching community. 

Professional Development Activities may include:

  1. Attendance to institutes, workshops, seminars, short courses, or other non-credit course work to improve teaching skills, refresh and broaden expertise in a particular content area, and/or retrain faculty members in new areas of expertise;
  2. Invited lectures or workshops of interest either to a particular school or department or to the faculty at large;
  3. Inviting an outside expert to give a lecture or conduct a workshop on campus*; and/or
  4. Attendance to conferences and meeting for the purpose of delivering a paper, poster, workshop, to chair a session, panel, or committee that have an impact or lasting effect on Gallaudet's teaching Community.

Domestic or international travel funds (Travel On) are available for the purpose of carrying out these activities and the costs associated with them.
* Presenter's Honorarium ($500 or less for an hour presentation; $750 or less for a two-three hour workshop; $1,000 or less for an all-day workshop)
** Participants' stipends may be requested for any activity that occurs during non-teaching periods. Stipends are $120 per day or less per participant, depending on the nature of the activity.

This Committee does not fund applications for the purchase of any instructional or reference materials nor for equipment or software.
