Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gallaudet University accredited?
YES. The University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

What is the MSCHE?
MSCHE is the unit of the Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools that focuses on accrediting degree-granting colleges and universities. Every ten years, Gallaudet University undergoes reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

What does accreditation mean?
Accreditation is a peer-review process coordinated by commissions on accreditation. The commissions are nationally recognized accrediting agencies that have the authority to determine the quality of education or training provided by institutions of higher education and other post-secondary programs. The MSCHE is one of six regional accrediting agencies in the United States. These accrediting bodies touch nearly all levels of education in the United States, from elementary schools to universities. Accreditation is a voluntary process and requires full cooperation and complete participation in the process by the university. Accreditation provides a structure for accountability and a way of ensuring quality. It is the primary means of determining the legitimacy and quality of an institution.

Does Gallaudet have other accreditations?
Yes, individual departments and programs have additional accreditations by various associations and organizations. More information about these certifications and accreditations can be found on those department and program websites or from the Graduate School and Professional Programs (GSPP)
Office of Accreditation and Certification.
