The Deaf Women's Leadership Seminar provides deaf women with an invigorating environment for self-awareness, exploration, actualization, and leadership development. Training modules are offered by nationally recognized deaf female leaders who engage participants in learning how to effectively advocate for their causes and develop the skills necessary to achieve results. Topics include self-awareness, leadership styles, communication, conflict resolution, and more!

  • Knowledge of own leadership style and variables for maximizing leadership impact
  • Professional communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Participation in discussion on a new leadership training program for young deaf women

Prerequisites:  Fluency in ASL; applicants should be working in leadership or advocacy roles

Dates: Saturday, February 23, 2013; 9:00am - 5:00pm and 7:00pm - 9:00pm, and  
           Sunday, February 24, 2013; 9:00am - 1:00pm

Tuition: $283 plus $30 processing fee (financial assistance is available for tuition, travel, and lodging)

Registration Deadline
January 25, 2013- applications will continue to be accepted after this date as long as space is available. The course will be offered contingent upon sufficient enrollment. You will receive an email confirmation letter from your Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURC) after January 25, 2013. We recommend you do not make travel arrangements or purchase materials before the course is confirmed.

Criteria for Applicant Selection
Two participants will be recruited from each state in the region (Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Utah).

Interested individuals should submit a brief video clip (no more than 5 minutes) in response to the following questions:

  • What background, education, and training have you had to prepare you to work with deaf and hard of hearing individuals?  
  • What work experience and/or leadership roles have you had in working with the deaf/hard of hearing community in your area?
  • What experiences have you had in working with deaf and hard of hearing youth?
  • How can your participation in the Deaf Women’s Leadership Seminar assist you in helping young Deaf women in your community?

Record your response in ASL and upload to any video format that is convenient and accessible for us to view, such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Send the link to agunders@austincc.edu no later than 5:00 pm CST on January 15, 2013. Selected applicants will also need to complete the online course registration by clicking on the “Register Online” button at the top of this page.

Refund Policy 
Before the registration deadline: Tuition is refundable upon written request; however a $50.00 administrative fee will be retained. Email your request to gurc.acc@gallaudet.edu. Requests must be received in the GURC office by the registration deadline or refunds will be processed as noted below:
After the registration deadline: Partial tuition is refundable upon written request as follows:
Withdrawals after 1/25/2013 - 50% of tuition is refundable
Withdrawals after 2/1/2012 – no refund
It is IMPERATIVE that your written request for refund be sent to gurc.acc@gallaudet.edu by the registration deadline. The $30.00 processing fee is not refundable. 

PST Credit
Courses with the prefix PST (Professional Studies) carry college credit and are designed for non-degree seeking students. Offered for reduced tuition, these credits are not applicable to a degree from Gallaudet but may be transferable to your home institution; it is your responsibility to check with your home institution should you desire to transfer credit.

Credit Hours

The unit of semester credit is defined as university-level credit that is awarded for completion of coursework, the transfer of coursework from another accredited institution, or the evaluation of college-level prior learning. One credit hour (at least 50 minutes) reflects an amount of work represented in the intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement for these learning outcomes. A credit hour is awarded on the basis of one of three sets of criteria. To meet the credit hour requirements, additional out of class hours will be required to complete these courses.
