Students - Alumni

Below are some quotations from students about their experience in the Department of Physical Education and Recreation

"It never crossed my mind that I would one day pursue a Master's degree. When I found out about the Master's program, with the support and encouragement from my family and the faculty of the P.E & Recreation department, I decided to go for it! I applied for my Master's in Leisure Service Administration. "Never, never, never, give up", Winston Churchill said! And a special thanks to Dr. Carol Riddick and my beloved dog, Briscoe, who helped me with my thesis study with Deaf patients".

"Looking back on my undergraduate years as a Therapeutic Recreation major, I learned a lot from my professors and they have always been very supportive and helpful. The classes helped prepare me for my job, where I am still employed. Thank you!!!"

"Hello Barbara, It's been too long since I've been back to visit Gallaudet! I'm glad to see you are still there and continuing to make a huge impact in the field of health and wellness. After a stint in the development/fundraising world, I became a program director at a local YMCA here in Nashville, TN. I obtained my certification as a senior director and eventually became the first deaf CEO of a YMCA of USA branch. After serving in that capacity, I decided I wanted to be more hands on with the members, so I became a certified personal trainer. Now I work at a great studio in Nashville called S.T.E.P.S., Inc. under the leadership of Dr. Irv Rubenstein. I work with a few clients during the week in the early morning hours. Then I head to my full time job as the Health and Wellness Director at a primary care facility that serves the working uninsured. I'm also teaching Intro to Health and Wellness classes at Nashville State Community College. As the Health and Wellness Director, I have developed a healthy lifestyles curriculum to guide behavior change. The program has been very successful and we are looking to expand it! This approach is termed, Medical Fitness Integration and continues to be the new future of health and wellness. One thing I would like to do is to get my master's and possibly Ph.d. in Exercise Physiology or Kinesiology. Are there any programs out there that you are aware of that I could attend under a minority scholarship? Or is there some kind of fellowship? I wouldn't mind working for a school/university and attending school at the same time. I am in the process of looking, but I thought I would start with you guys! Future trainings that are paid for are ACSM certification with a clinical exercise specialty. And mindful coaching certification which focuses on behavior change as it relates to the brain. Thanks Barbara, and I look forward to hearing from you.

PTCHealth and Wellness Director Faith Family Medical Clinic
