Dear members of the campus community,

Now that the pomp and pageantry of the inauguration, hooding and graduation are over, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you and share some information about what comes next.  We know that this past semester has been a tremendously taxing and busy one, with lots of demands on everyone’s time and energy, and we know that the Program Prioritization process added even more to that work load.  For that reason, we appreciate the patience and good humor with which you have responded to our requests for information, your willingness to work with us and the Office of Institutional Research in clarifying data, the countless hours of work you put in, and the trust you have invested in us to do this job right.  We appreciate that trust and as we begin to review and prioritize programs, we will do our utmost to make sure that the process is completed with integrity and care.

One thing that this procedure has revealed are some of the shortcomings of the data collection policies, procedures and process on campus.  Members of the committee have shared some of those issues with the Provost, and we will inform other administrators as appropriate so that future campus data collection efforts will take those concerns into account.  However, one positive outcome has been that programs and departments have become more aware of their own data needs and many have stated that they will reevaluate and change the way they document their efforts and the types of data they gather in future, based on this exercise.

Now that programs have submitted their data, we will begin the most difficult part, the program review and prioritization based on the data submitted.  If there are questions about the information programs submitted, we will meet with department Chairs to clarify as needed.  We are setting up several sessions for those meetings with all members of the taskforce, so that we all receive the same information about the programs we are reviewing.  We are holding 1-5 pm on May 21, June 8 and June 9 for those meetings and will schedule Chairs and Program directors for 15-30 minutes each during this period.  Chairs can request a meeting with us during that time to discuss their data and programs and to help us understand their programs better. We will also schedule other meetings as and if necessary.  We expect to complete our report on program prioritization to the Provost and President by July 15, 2010. We have previously disseminated information on how this process will happen (see our website, Snippets of April 14).

With the end of the semester, we are discontinuing the weekly Snippets and will only send out information when we have anything new to report.  However, you can continue to send questions and comments to the Program.Prioritization@gallaudet.edu email address.  After the prioritization report is complete, the committee will go on hiatus for the summer and then resume meeting in the Fall to finalize criteria for new programs and viability standards for all programs.
