Admission Requirements

A graduate degree from Gallaudet signifies the highest level of professional training available for individuals working in deafness-related, human service occupations. Our goal is to enroll the most qualified, diverse and talented students possible. The Graduate Catalog provides information about our admissions criteria for degree-seeking students, graduate certificate students, graduate international students, etc.

Application Requirements

Application requirements vary among the programs. Carefully read the Graduate School Catalog and the supplemental information pages for specific program and entrance exam requirements.

Letters of RecommendationIMPORTANT

Most programs require letters of recommendation. See the Graduate School Catalog for the specific requirements for each program. There are special instructions and forms for applicants to the Department of Administration and Supervision and to the Department of Counseling.

For applicants to all other programs, fill out the top part (Part A) of the letters of recommendation form and send it to the person you've asked to write a letter of recommendation. Part B should be filled out by the recommender. The page should be sent along with his or her letter of recommendation to the Graduate Enrollment Office. Letters should attest to your ability to succeed in graduate school in your chosen field.

Goal Statement

Your goal statement can be mailed (as paper copy -- typed, please) to Graduate Admissions, or it can be e-mailed to from the same e-mail address you used for creating your online application. You should completely answer the following questions about yourself.

On separate sheets of paper, completely answer the following questions about yourself. If you are applying to more than one program, write separate goal statements for each program, clearly indicating which program each statement applies to. Write as much as you wish; you need not be brief.

1. What kind of career or vocational objective would you like to follow and in what setting (public school, residential school, research center, clinic, corporation, etc.)?

2. How did you first become interested in your chosen field of study? When did you decide to pursue a degree in this field?

3. What do you consider to be your greatest asset as a future professional in your chosen field?

4. Provide any other information that will help us better understand you as an individual and better evaluate you as an applicant for this program.

Some departments require an essay in addition to the goal statement and some accept an essay instead of a goal statement. Please review all requirements carefully.

Immunization Requirement

The immunization laws for the District of Columbia require all students to provide proof of immunizations. Students will not be permitted to register for classes without the required immunizations. All full time students are required to have health insurance that provides coverage in the District of Columbia metropolitan area. (Each) student must either waive or purchase the health insurance online through his/her Bison account. For more information concerning requirements for immunizations and how to waive or purchase the health insurance, please visit the Student Health Services website.
