Name: Daqian Dang
Field of Study: Mathematics
My name is Daqian Dang and I am a citizen of China. I was born in Shanghai. I came to Gallaudet University in fall 2008, and I studied at the English Language Institution to improve my English skills and learn American Sign Language. Currently, I studied Mathematics graduated in May 2013. I plan to seek a graduate degree in Mathematics or Deaf Education in the future.
My goal is to become a math teacher and provide help and support for the deaf community when I go back to China. Because Chinese deaf people are still suffering discrimination from the dominant social groups, I want to become a deaf leader in China help deaf people achieve equal rights. I would also like to help Chinese deaf people build a communication bridge with the American deaf community to increase knowledge about culture and sign language.
The Sasakawa Scholarship through the Nippon Foundation has helped me to further my education and continue my studies at Gallaudet University. I thank the scholarship program for assisting me in achieving my dream to help develop the deaf community in China, and educate deaf people to be well-rounded, democratic, open-minded, and academically successful.
