Brian Showalter, a native of Virginia, returned to the area in July 2014 to accept his current position at Gallaudet after serving as a senior member of the City of Olathe, Kansas' award-winning web development team. His prior job was systems administrator for a retirement community in Harrisonburg, Va.
As a passionate advocate of Free and Open Source software (FOSS), Brian looks for ways to adopt and adapt FOSS as the ideal solution for a wide variety of uses. He is fluent in a number of programming languages, knowledgeable about several database systems, and is an experienced Linux/Unix system administrator.
In his free time, Brian enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, practicing taekwondo, engaging in a variety of outdoor activities, and, of course, tinkering with computers.
Brian responds to information management needs and manages applications and servers in RSIA. He is knowledgeable in a variety of programming languages and frameworks, and is skilled in the processes of participatory consumer involvement in software design or adaptation, coordinating with outside consultants, and training of users. He also handles webpage updates and enhancements for the office. He also provides support for Goal E.3.3 of the Gallaudet Strategic Plan, which calls for the establishment and maintenance of a state-of-the-art web-based national clearinghouse for research-based information relating to deaf and hard of hearing people.
