Short Biography

Brian Showalter, a native of Virginia, returned to the area in July 2014 to accept his current position at Gallaudet after serving as a senior member of the City of Olathe, Kansas' award-winning web development team. His prior job was systems administrator for a retirement community in Harrisonburg, Va.

As a passionate advocate of Free and Open Source software (FOSS), Brian looks for ways to adopt and adapt FOSS as the ideal solution for a wide variety of uses. He is fluent in a number of programming languages, knowledgeable about several database systems, and is an experienced Linux/Unix system administrator.

In his free time, Brian enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, practicing taekwondo, engaging in a variety of outdoor activities, and, of course, tinkering with computers.


Brian responds to information management needs and manages applications and servers in RSIA. He is knowledgeable in a variety of programming languages and frameworks, and is skilled in the processes of participatory consumer involvement in software design or adaptation, coordinating with outside consultants, and training of users. He also handles webpage updates and enhancements for the office. He also provides support for Goal E.3.3 of the Gallaudet Strategic Plan, which calls for the establishment and maintenance of a state-of-the-art web-based national clearinghouse for research-based information relating to deaf and hard of hearing people.

  • Over 29 years of experience implementing a wide variety of successful and cost-effective solutions in the computer and information technology field.
  • Over 18 years of experience with the Linux operating system, particularly the Red Hat, CentOS, and Ubuntu distributions. Knowledge of Windows 7 and Server 2008. Some experience with Active Directory, particularly in regard to interfacing via LDAP and Kerberos.
  • Experience with virtualization solutions, including Proxmox VE, OpenVZ, KVM, VirtualBox and VMWare.
  • Proficiency in a variety of computer programming languages, including PHP, Javascript, HTML, Python, Java, Perl, SQL, BASH scripting and ColdFusion. Working knowledge of other languages including Ruby, C and C++.
  • Familiarity with the Eclipse IDE, VIM editor and Git revision control systems.
  • Entry-level experience with developing Android mobile applications.
  • Considerable experience with a variety of database systems, including MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Postgresql and DB2/400.
  • Considerable experience with the Drupal content management system, jQuery Javascript library, Apache HTTP server and Tomcat Java application container.
  • Strong hardware and software problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Hardware experience includes running ethernet cables, attaching connectors and setting up and configuring servers, switches, routers and other networking equipment.
  • Ability to quickly learn new concepts via individual self study and hands-on experimentation.
  • Outstanding command of the written English language.
