Sophia Fowler Gallaudet (March 20, 1798– May 13, 1877) played an important role in deaf history by lobbying Congress to establish the National Deaf-Mute College, today called Gallaudet University. Born deaf in Connecticut to parents Miner Fowler and Rachel Hall, Sophia married Rev. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, for whom the University is named, and had eight children.
