FAQ for Discover Your Future

What do participants in the Discover Your Future program do each day?
Program participants are up and at breakfast by 8:00 am. Classes start promptly at 8:45. Students will attend Career Exploration and Diversity Training classes until noon each day, then we will have outings in the D.C. area every afternoon/evening -- exciting days filled with learning opportunities in an environment rich in cultural diversity!

Where are the participants housed?
Participants will be housed together in a newly renovated dorm on campus.

Are participants supervised?
Participants are supervised 24/7 by qualified camp staff and dorm counselors specifically assigned to the Youth programs. Additionally, all dorms have Resident Advisors on duty in the main office.

What does the program fee cover?
Program fee covers program instruction, housing, three meals a day, outings, recreation fees and camp t-shirt.

Is linen provided for my child?
Yes- one set of sheets, a pillow and a set of towels (towel and wash cloth). Your child may also bring his/her own linen.

Should my child bring spending money?
Yes, for snacks in the evenings and for off campus trips such as Rehoboth Beach trip.

Is there a Bookstore on campus?
There is a Bookstore on campus which sells a variety of items typically sold in a small drug store. It is closed on the weekends.

Will Gallaudet provide transportation to and from the airport?
Yes. If your child is traveling alone, transportation to and from the airport will be provided for those using Reagan National Airport (DCA). You will need to make other arrangements if using Washington Dulles (IAD) or Baltimore Washington International (BWI). (You will receive a confirmation package - a link to a Google Doc for your child's travel information will be provided). One of our staff members will meet your child at the security gate wearing a Gallaudet t-shirt and carrying a sign with your child's name.

Are accommodations available to parents who accompany their child and wish to stay overnight?
Residence Life provides visitors housing. There is also the Kellogg Conference Hotel on campus. Please contact Visitors Housing at visitor.housing@gallaudet.edu directly for the housing registration form. Kellogg Conference Hotel's reservation number is (202) 651-6000.

What is the Discovery Ropes Course?
The Personal Discovery Program (Ropes Course and Rock Gym) is a powerful outdoor experience designed to foster self-discovery, confidence, teamwork, communication, problem solving, and group processing skills. It is a carefully planned program that includes progressively challenging activities on a well-designed structure of ropes and initiative events that incorporate physical, mental and social challenges. The course is inspected annually and updates made where needed. The Participant's involvement in these events is strictly voluntary.

Can I do a payment plan?
Yes. We accept payment plans in two installments. A minimum of a $300 deposit needs to be made for the first installment. Full payment is due no later than April15, 2014 in order to guarantee your child's spot in the program of choice. We will send an email to update you on the status of processed payments as well.

Is there financial assistance available for Discover Your Future participants?
Yes, we do have scholarships for both programs. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you will need to fill out a scholarship form with a letter explaining why you should receive the scholarship as well as a copy of your recent tax forms. We provide scholarships only to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

What else is required other than submitting an application online?
After submitting an application online, we will need either a copy of your child’s high school transcript or a letter of recommendation from their guidance counselor. Those documents can be faxed to (202) 651-5744 to the attention of Jesse Saunders, Youth Programs & Outreach Coordinator or e-mailed to samantha.krieger@gallaudet.edu. We will send a confirmation e-mail upon receipt and in regards to your child's acceptance into the program.

When is the application deadline?
We do not have a specific deadline. However, spots do fill up quickly, so the sooner we receive everything, the better. Discover Your Future program will have a maximum of 40 students.

When is check-in and check-out dates/times?
Check-in is on July 15th and check-out is on July 23rd. Check-in times may vary due to flight times. Participants must check out of the dorms no later than noon on July 23rd.

Which airport should I look at having my child fly into?
Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the closest to Gallaudet. It is also Metro accessible and taxi-friendly. We will have a camp counselor meet your child at the baggage claim and accompany them on their way to Gallaudet.
